CPF
Also known as: Central Provident Fund
- Definition
- The Central Provident Fund (CPF) is Singapore's mandatory social security savings system. Employee and employer contributions accumulate across Ordinary, Special, MediSave, and Retirement accounts with state-guaranteed minimum returns.
CPF affects every Singapore citizen and permanent resident. CPF Investment Scheme (CPFIS) allows holders to invest CPF balances above a minimum threshold in approved instruments (unit trusts, ETFs, gold, fixed-income). CPF nomination is a key estate-planning tool — CPF balances do not pass under a Will and must be nominated separately. For HNW families, CPF planning is a small but non-trivial component of the broader estate-planning picture (see estateplanner.sg sister site).
